Caring for newborns, especially those requiring specialised medical attention, is a top priority at Clover Hospital and Fertility Clinic. Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is dedicated to providing the highest level of care for premature or critically ill infants.

What is the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)?

The NICU is a specialised department of paediatrics that provides critical care and treatment for newborns who are born prematurely or have serious medical conditions. At Clover Hospital and Fertility Clinic, our NICU is equipped with advanced monitoring systems and specialised medical devices to ensure the health and well-being of these infants. Here, a highly trained team of neonatologists, nurses, and healthcare professionals provides comprehensive, around-the-clock care.

In the NICU, babies are continuously monitored for vital signs such as heart rate, breathing, and oxygen levels. This allows the medical team to identify and address any issues early on, ensuring the best possible outcomes for your baby.

Premature Birth:

Babies born before 37 weeks may require additional medical care to support their development.

Low Birth Weight:

Infants with low birth weight often face challenges that need specialised care.

Medical Conditions:

Some newborns have medical conditions that require immediate and intensive care in the NICU.

Yes, at Clover Hospital and Fertility Clinic, we encourage parental contact in the NICU. As the baby’s condition stabilises, parents may be able to hold and cuddle their baby more frequently. You can engage in skin-to-skin contact, known as kangaroo care, which promotes emotional bonding and helps regulate the baby’s temperature and vital signs.

Parents can hold their baby against their bare chest, which helps to regulate the baby’s temperature and promote bonding.

Visitation Policies

Each NICU has specific visitation rules to ensure the safety and well-being of the babies. Communicate with the NICU staff to understand the visiting hours and policies.

How do I feed my baby in the NICU?
  • IV Nutrition: Initially, some babies may receive nutrients through IV.
  • Bottle Feeding: As they grow stronger, bottle feeding is introduced.
  • Tube Feeding: For babies who cannot feed orally, tube feeding may be necessary.
Can I breastfeed in the NICU?

Breastfeeding is often encouraged, if possible. Our NICU provides support and private areas for breastfeeding. Breast milk offers vital nutrients and immune benefits, which are especially important in the NICU setting.

Consultation with NICU Staff

The NICU staff is available to guide and support you in breastfeeding your baby. They offer advice on schedules, techniques, and any special considerations for your baby’s condition.

Breastfeeding Support
  • Lactation consultants are available for one-on-one assistance.
  • Breast pumps are provided for expressing milk if direct breastfeeding is not possible.
  • Skin-to-skin contact is encouraged to stimulate milk production and promote bonding.
Can I express breast milk for my baby in the NICU?

Expressing breast milk is highly encouraged. The NICU staff will support you in establishing and maintaining your milk supply through regular pumping.

Breast pumps and milk storage:

The NICU provides hospital-grade electric breast pumps and secure storage for expressed milk, which is labelled and kept refrigerated or frozen until needed.

Feeding Schedule of Newborns in NICU:

A NICU staff will work with you to establish a pumping and feeding schedule, ensuring your baby receives breast milk as often as possible.

Lactation Support:

Lactation consultants are available to help with expressing milk and resolving any issues.

NICU incubators

Specialised equipment and Expert care

The NICU is outfitted with incubators, ventilators, and other specialised medical devices designed to support the delicate needs of premature or critically ill newborns. These tools are essential in maintaining the infant’s body temperature, breathing, and overall health.

Our NICU team consists of neonatologists, specialised nurses, and other healthcare professionals dedicated to providing the highest level of care. We work tirelessly to monitor and treat newborns, offering support and guidance to families throughout their stay.
